Snakes and snails and… bugs! That’s what boys are made of! Bug collecting or just catching bugs is a wonderful necessary thing for a kid to do. Mom don’t get in the way of letting this happen. Keep mayo jars handy for the brief bug hotel (just a day visit is fine) you can let them out at night. The act of catching bugs brings developmental accomplishments for kids. Patience is required to wait for them and find them. Fine motor skills are used to pick them up. Gentleness is required not to crush them and toughness is required to carry out the task; not to mention the giggles when they try to scare mom or little sister, perhaps the most fun part of bug catching! Don’t mistakenly think that this activity is too young for your child, just watching an ant hill in action is pretty fascinating even for your older child. Video games are very isolating. So encourage him to get out of the house and slow down and stop gaming long enough to absorb a few wonderful things nature has to offer, even if it is just watching a fascinating bug!
