We covered a lot of info last week on the developmental needs of children. If you are like me, it is hard to remember all the dentist appointments, school meetings and groceries, so how am I going to remember the three most important developmental ingredients to my child’s day? Remember ATM ( Attachment, Touch, Movement) every day! Just like you are remembering to keep track of your child’s health and eating habits, remembering ATM daily will help you make a mental check list of what he needs developmentally.
- Did one thing happen to help your child feel more attached to and connected to your family today? For a toddler it make look like a special job around the house (kid’s feel loved when they are needed); for your middle school child having a sit down meal together is very effective. If you can’t have dinner every night maybe breakfast or even sitting with him after school for a snack to have a 5 min recap on the day. For your high school kids be sure you get a few minutes in before they go to bed. Also children benefit from a quick “I love you” daily. Spend time with your child to meet his attachment needs.
- Did you sneak in that hug, pat on the back or high five? See to it that your child has some healthy touch every day.
- Did you give them opportunity to move a lot today? For every minute that your child is in front of a screen he is not moving the way he needs to move to develop his brain, his muscles and his confidence.
- Most ATMs are outside so it will be easy to remember that nature is a very big part of your child’s daily needs.
ATM: a quick easy way to remember what is important for your child in this world of wonderful but often overused screens. Make wise ATM deposits daily and your child will receive a lifetime of benefits!
